Clement THAM_2015+It is our immense pleasure to invite you to the 33rd Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) Congress, held in conjunction with the 29th Hong Kong Ophthalmological Symposium and co-hosted by the Hong Kong Ophthalmological Society and the College of Ophthalmologists of Hong Kong, at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, from February 8 – 11, 2018.
We are much honored that Hong Kong has once again been chosen to host the prestigious APAO annual congress, which has now become the premier ophthalmic professional and scientific event. Professor Dennis Lam is leading the star-studded Scientific Program Committee to invite over 1000 leading experts from around the world, with an emphasis on the latest cutting-edge scientific innovations, treatments, surgical techniques, and technologies. Our scientific program will be the best showcase for the theme of our APAO 2018 Congress – ‘Creativity and Technology without Boundaries’, with the clear objective of preparing today’s ophthalmic practitioners for the ever-evolving future of eye care.
Hong Kong is a hugely dynamic city with a unique blend of Eastern and Western cultures. Her panoramic range of tourist attractions caters for all types of visitors and interests. It is my honour and pleasure to invite you to the 2018 Congress of the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology in Hong Kong, co-hosted by the Hong Kong Ophthalmological Society and the College of Ophthalmologists of Hong Kong.
This year, the APAO Congress will be held in conjunction with the 29th Hong Kong Ophthalmological Symposium. Bringing together ophthalmologists from around the world, APAO 2018 will feature more than 1,000 internationally recognized speakers presenting their latest work and scientific innovations in the major ophthalmic subspecialties. An attendance figure of around 5,000 delegates is anticipated.
The APAO Congress also provides delegates with an excellent occasion to network and look for collaborative opportunities. Additionally, Congress attendees can enjoy beautiful and historic attractions, along with delicious cuisine and unlimited shopping experiences, in the dynamic city of Hong Kong.
We very much look forward to seeing you in Hong Kong during the 33rd APAO Congress. It is an event not to be missed!

Amendments can be arranged free of charge and are subject to availability before January 3, 2018. Bank charges are to be deducted from the refund.
Cancellation must be made before September 15, 2017. No refunds will be given for cancellations received after that date.
Standard check-in time will be 14:00 and check-out time 12:00. Early check-in or late check-out will be subject to availability and may incur surcharges.
Room upgrades, extra beds and airport pick-up may be available upon request and are subject to extra expense.

Abstract submission is open online until September 6, 2017 (Wednesday) at http://congress.apaophth.org.
All abstracts must be submitted in English exclusively via the online abstract submission system. Submissions by post, email, fax or any other means will NOT be accepted.
AUTHORS – FIRST (PRESENTING) AUTHOR – The first author will be the presenting author. The first (presenting) author is expected to register and pay the full registration fee, attend the Congress and make the presentation.
Please provide an accurate email address for the first (presenting) author. Abstract submission results and abstract-related correspondence will be sent by email to the first author.
CO-AUTHOR(S) – A maximum of FIVE co-authors are allowed for each abstract. Type in the names and affiliations as you would like them to appear in any publication. Please give the names in full for each of the co-authors. Initials are only accepted for middle names if any.
The ABSTRACT TITLE must be concise. Avoid using abbreviations in the title.
Abstract content (excluding title, authors, highest degrees and institutions) should include the following headings: PURPOSE, METHODS, RESULTS and CONCLUSIONS. The abstract must not exceed 250 words. Do not include graphs, tables, images or references in the abstract. Do not mention in the abstract the names of any affiliated institutes, academic institutions, hospitals, eye centers, etc. or names of any individuals involved in the study. Otherwise, the abstract will be rejected outright.
Define each abbreviation the first time it is used in the abstract by placing what it stands for in parentheses.
It is the author’s responsibility to submit an abstract with correct spelling and grammar. The Selection Committee, however, reserves the right to edit the abstract if it has significant spelling and grammatical mistakes.
Successfully submitted abstracts will be acknowledged with an electronic receipt including an abstract reference number, which should be quoted in all future correspondence. If you do not receive an acknowledgement within 24 hours after submission, please contact the Congress Secretariat by email at email@example.com.
The Selection Committee strongly recommends that authors submit their abstracts as early as possible in order to avoid a last-minute rush and system congestion. When the abstract is submitted, it can still be revised until September 6, 2017 (Wednesday). Kindly note that only the latest version will be reviewed.
Late submissions will NOT be considered.
Submitted abstracts will be peer-reviewed by the Selection Committee. The review process is confidential and the decision is final.
Authors will be notified of the abstract selection results no later than October 11, 2017.
Authors may be given the option to change the format of their presentation as a condition for acceptance.
The Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology holds the copyright to all the materials presented at the Congress and may reproduce the materials in any form for distribution.
Submitted Instruction Courses
A course outline in less than 100 words should be submitted.
There should be no more than five instructors per instruction course.
AUTHORS – FIRST AUTHOR – The first author will be the chief instructor. The first author should submit a brief biography of himself/herself, stating his/her expertise in less than 300 words.
Please provide an accurate email address for the first author. Abstract submission results and abstract-related correspondence will be sent by email to the first author.
CO-AUTHOR(S) – A maximum of FOUR co-instructors are allowed for each abstract. Type in the names and affiliations as you would like them to appear in any publication. Please give the names in full for each of the co-authors. Initials are only accepted for middle names if any.
Both the chief instructor and the co-instructors are expected to register and pay the full registration fee, attend the Congress and make the presentations. The chief instructor MUST obtain the co-instructors’ consent before submitting their names.
Upon successful submission, the chief instructor cannot be changed unless there are extenuating circumstances. Requests must be made in writing by the chief instructor to the Secretariat Office addressing the Scientific Program Committee Chair at least 1 month before the Congress. Permission will be granted at the sole discretion of the Scientific Program Committee Chair.
Instruction courses on clinical sciences should present current and reasonably established information. Controversies and unestablished concepts should be submitted as free paper or poster presentations.
Submitted Free Papers, Posters & Videos
Please select the right category for the abstract.
If ‘Free Paper or Poster’ is chosen, authors will have the opportunity to have the abstract reviewed for poster presentation in the event that it is not accepted for free paper presentation.
After submitting a video abstract, the first author must upload the video by September 6, 2017. Detailed instructions will be sent to the first author upon successful abstract submission.
All videos should be within 8 minutes in MP4 format.
Videos will be evaluated based on their scientific merits, educational values, originality, quality, conciseness, audiovisual effects, editing skills, etc.
Before submission, please check:
If the abstract has a concise, descriptive title;
If the study has sufficient data leading to conclusive outcomes;
If the names of any affiliated institutes, academic institutions, hospitals, eye centers and individuals involved in the study have been removed;
If the abstract states clearly the purpose, methods, results, findings and conclusions of the study;
If the study is conducted in a methodologically correct way;
If the abstract is proofread and/or edited by a native speaker of English;
If the abstract is within the word limit.
