Event Overview
Welcome message:

“With educators, scientists, physicians, nurses, psychologists, pharmacists, social workers, alternative health care providers, veterinarians, lawyers and many more, we have the opportunity to seize the diverse expertise within our university, bring down invisible barriers, and synergize our efforts in treating pain. By working together, we can stem the tide of the national epidemic of inadequate and too often harmful pain management and lead innovations that will change how pain is addressed by health providers and taught by health educators nationwide.”

— Scott Fishman, director,

UC Davis Center for

Advancing Pain Relief

This two-day conference for primary care clinicians integrates recent scientific data with current clinic practice regarding pain management. Topics include responsible opioid prescribing, pain and mental health, and pain management essentials. Participants will also learn about the management of co-morbid conditions and the integration and coordination of pain management within primary care.

Pain places enormous burden on individuals, society and the health system. Appropriate recognition and treatment of pain can have a significant positive impact. Primary care providers have not been adequately trained on the:

diagnosis and appropriate treatment of pain within a primary care or medical setting, resulting in an incomplete understanding of when to refer to a pain management specialist or addictionologist

appropriate and safe use of opioid analgesics, resulting in clinicians feeling confused on whether to prescribe or not prescribe due to perceptions of risk

Treatment of comorbid conditions of mental health and chronic pain, resulting in clinicians ignoring the problem out of frustration of not knowing what best to do for the patient.

Recognize how to evaluate the patient in pain

Implement evidence-based treatment for pain

Identify when it is appropriate to seek pain management or addiction consultation or referral

State how to prescribe opioids for chronic pain in rational and responsible manner

Recognize how to identify and treat addictive behaviors

Identify the legal issues surrounding pain management

Develop an awareness of other treatment modalities besides medications

Identify the connection between chronic pain and mood dysregulation, including depression and anxiety

Review the clinical concerns associated with use of opioids

Review the AMPS approach to primary care psychiatric assessment

Agenda with syllabus will be available in May 2017
