The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh #

Edinburgh, UK
The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh is the oldest and largest of the UK surgical Royal Colleges, and one of the largest of all the UK medical Royal Colleges. First incorporated as the Barber Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1505, the College has been at the vanguard of surgical innovation and developments for over 500 years. Today we are a modern, thriving, global network of medical professionals with memberships approaching 25,000 professionals who live and work in more than 100 countries around the world. 15,000 of these live and work in the UK and 80% of that figure are based in England and Wales. Our membership includes people at every stage of their career, from medical students through to trainees, consultants and those who have retired from practice. With our interest in professional standards, the College’s primary role – and the main concern of our Fellows and Members - is to ensure the safety of our patients and provide them with the best possible care. We do this by championing the highest standards of surgical and dental practice; through our provision of courses and educational programmes, training, examinations and Continuous Professional Development; our liaison with external medical bodies; and by influencing healthcare policy across the UK. Our main campus in Edinburgh, which includes a dedicated skills laboratory, the Surgeons' Hall Museums, College Library, function and meeting facilities, a 77 bedroom hotel, postgraduate accommodation, and office space for over 140 staff, was joined in 2014 by our second site in Birmingham’s prestigious Colmore Row. This new base offers office space, facilities for events and courses and spaces for our membership to meet and take part in the College’s activities.

Event Overview
Welcome message:

This course is aimed at FY2 and above, and primarily those preparing for the Intercollegiate Part B MRCS Examination. It is designed to help improve candidates' performance in the MRCS Part B Examination via practice sessions with 'mock' MRCS OSCE stations and discussions with examiners on the pitfalls and problems commonly encountered with the examination process. The course structure includes short lectures, discussion groups and OSCE stations. Please note that participants can attend both this course and The Aberdeen MOCK MRCS OSCE Course if they wish.

Target Audience

Candidates preparing for the Intercollegiate MRCS Part B (OSCE) Examination.

Learning Style

This two day course uses a combination of presentations, discussion groups, practice sessions and individual feedback given by tutors experienced in the MRCS Exam. A major component of the course is the series of simulated MRCS OSCE stations covering clinical and procedural skills, applied surgical science and critical care, anatomy and surgical pathology and communication skills. Clinical OSCE stations use both real and simulated patients and examiners give structured individual feedback with candidates both observing and taking part in the mock sessions. This course offers an ideal opportunity to apply knowledge gained on ‘Anatomy for MRCS OSCEs’ and the two courses are regularly run alongside each other.

Aims & Objectives

This course is designed to help improve candidates’ performance in the MRCS Part B (OSCE) examination by providing experience of mock MRCS OSCE stations, highlighting the pitfalls and problems commonly encountered with the examination process and equipping the candidate with relevant and effective techniques to allow them to prepare for the examination with confidence.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course participants should be able to: 1) Describe the content areas that can be covered during the MRCS OSCE; 2) Describe the structure of a typical MRCS OSCE; 3) Describe the common areas of failure associated with the examination; 4) Identify their strengths and weaknesses relating to skills and knowledge covered by the MRCS OSCE; 5) Utilise effective examination techniques for an OSCE
