name is Yoshihiko Maehara, from the Department of Surgery and Science
of Kyushu University, and I have been given the honor of being appointed
the Congress President of the 113th Annual Congress of the
Japan Surgical Society. The Annual Congress is scheduled to take place
over a three-day period from April 11th to 13th, 2013. It is a
tremendous honor for both me and my colleagues to be able to host the
Annual Congress. We are preparing ourselves for the challenge ahead
with a great sense of responsibility, as we seek to provide a
stimulating forum to learn about and discuss the latest advances in the
field of surgery.</span></span></td></tr><tr><td align=\"left\" height=\"14\" scope=\"row\" valign=\"top\"><img height=\"18\" src=\"http://www.congre.co.jp/jss2013/eng/common/normal/spacer.gif\" width=\"14\" /></td></tr><tr><td align=\"left\" scope=\"row\" valign=\"top\"><span class=\"greeting\"><span class=\"text\"> The 113th
Annual Congress will be the fifth time that our department will act as
host. The first time was in 1906, when the first professor of our
department, Prof. Harutoyo Omori, presided over the 7th Annual Congress. Thereafter, the 34th congress in 1933 was presided over by Prof. Shichiro Goto, the 78th congress in 1978 by Prof. Kiyoshi Inokuchi, and the 99th
congress in 1999 by Prof. Keizo Sugimachi. Capitalizing on the valuable
accumulated experiences of hosting the Annual Congress, passed down to
us from our predecessors, we are currently preparing for a productive
and fulfilling Annual Congress.</span></span></td></tr><tr><td align=\"left\" height=\"14\" scope=\"row\" valign=\"top\"><img alt=\"\" height=\"18\" src=\"http://www.congre.co.jp/jss2013/eng/common/normal/spacer.gif\" width=\"14\" /></td></tr><tr><td align=\"left\" scope=\"row\" valign=\"top\"><span class=\"greeting\"><span class=\"text\"> The main theme for the 113th
Annual Congress has been designated “創始と継志”-Soushi & Keiji-
(Creation and Succession of Will). In the more than 100 year history of
modern surgery in Japan, the surgical techniques for treating
intractable diseases were created (“創始”-Soushi-) by the diligent efforts
of our predecessors, which have significantly improved the health and
welfare of the Japanese public, as well as that of patients around the
world. Thereafter, by developing various revolutionary diagnostic
techniques, creative surgical methods and robust perioperative
management methods, the created achievements, accompanied by the strong
will that made them possible, have been continuously passed down to us
(as “継志” -Keiji-). I believe that it was through this process of “継志”
-Keiji- (the will to succeed) that the “創始” -Soushi- (created)
techniques and methods have thus made rapid development and have thus
become widely disseminated. Reflecting deeply on that history, I believe
that we, who bear the responsibility for ensuring that modern surgery
and surgical medicine continue on this path, must continue to contribute
to improvements in the quality of medicine. This includes improving the
outcomes for surgery patients by utilizing the various pharmaceutical
products and surgical devices that have been developed, and by also
employing the latest technologies, developing new surgical techniques,
and adding innovations and enhancements to the existing techniques and
devices.</span></span></td></tr><tr><td align=\"left\" height=\"14\" scope=\"row\" valign=\"top\"><img alt=\"\" height=\"18\" src=\"http://www.congre.co.jp/jss2013/eng/common/normal/spacer.gif\" width=\"14\" /></td></tr><tr><td align=\"left\" scope=\"row\" valign=\"top\"><span class=\"greeting\"><span class=\"text\"> We
have dual expectations for the Annual Congress. First, that it will
provide a forum for colleagues to report on the development of new
techniques, innovations and improvements in surgical medicine, as well
as efforts to improve the outcome and quality of treatment. Second, that
by presenting young surgeons and medical students with a glimpse of the
future of surgery, we will be able to further boost the pool of human
resources for the next generation of surgical medicine experts, and
ensure that vital knowledge and techniques are passed on from one
generation to the next.</span></span></td></tr><tr><td align=\"left\" height=\"14\" scope=\"row\" valign=\"top\"><img alt=\"\" height=\"18\" src=\"http://www.congre.co.jp/jss2013/eng/common/normal/spacer.gif\" width=\"14\" /></td></tr><tr><td align=\"left\" scope=\"row\" valign=\"top\"><span class=\"greeting\"><span class=\"text\"> Here
is a snapshot of the various programs we are planning. For example, in
the Memorial Lecture session, entitled “創始と継志”-Soushi & Keiji-
(Creation and the Will to Succeed), we will hear from the pioneers who
have established new techniques, and from their successors, who
continued the process of innovation and creation, together with new
directions and dreams for the future. Furthermore, in addition to the
regular programs such as symposia, panel discussions and workshops, we
are planning to include a debate session. We hope that this new session
will provide a forum for debate on important themes that have still not
reached an established consensus and are subject to ongoing discussion.
We will call upon specialists to provide reports on various theories and
practices based on their research as a touchstone for lively and active
debate. In addition, in order to maintain our motivation to remain one
of the world leaders in the development of surgical techniques, we plan
to invite many colleagues to deliver invited lectures, with an emphasis
on specialists from wide-ranging fields overseas.</span></span></td></tr><tr><td align=\"left\" height=\"14\" scope=\"row\" valign=\"top\"><img alt=\"\" height=\"18\" src=\"http://www.congre.co.jp/jss2013/eng/common/normal/spacer.gif\" width=\"14\" /></td></tr><tr><td align=\"left\" scope=\"row\" valign=\"top\"><span class=\"greeting\"><span class=\"text\"> Fukuoka,
Hakata has, since ages past, acted as Japanʼs gateway to the Asian
continent, and has been a location for vigorous international exchange
and interaction. It would bring us no greater pleasure than to be able
to gather knowledge from Japan and around the world here in Kyushu in
order to provide the impetus for the further development of surgery and
surgical medicine. So that the 113th Annual Congress proves
to be an outstanding gathering that will remain in the memories of
surgeons around the world, I, together with all my colleagues, will
spare no effort in engaging in preparations over the next year.</span></span></td></tr></tbody></table><br />
