Event Overview
Welcome message:
The Thaddeus Mann Memorial Lecture will be delievered by Professor Masaru Okabe, Osaka University.

On behalf of both the Local and Program Organizing Committees, it is my great honour and pleasure to welcome you to the beautiful city of Newcastle, NSW, for the 12th International Symposium on Spermatology.

This is an extremely prestigious meeting, which is held once every 4 years and has now been running for almost half a century in different international locations. It brings together the global community of scientists conducting research on the cell biology of spermatozoa and fertilization to share new knowledge and understanding in this rapidly developing field. Since the opening Symposium in 1969, this conference has been held in Sweden, USA, France, Japan (2x), Italy (2x), Australia, Canada, South Africa and Spain. It is now Australia’s turn again and we are proud to be hosting this conference in Newcastle.

Newcastle is not only famed for the quality of its beaches but is also the home of one the nation’s leading Universities with a significant research interest in the reproductive sciences. Geographically, Newcastle represents the port where the Hunter river enters the ocean. It is in close proximity to the Hunter Valley Vineyards and ranks second only to Kentucky, USA, as an International Centre of Thoroughbred Breeding Excellence. Recognizing the local interest in horse and cattle breeding, this Spermatology conference will be held back-to-back with the 9th Biennial Conference of the Association for Applied Animal Andrology and the two conferences will co-host a joint meeting on sperm biology in large domestic animals, featuring the world’s leading authorities in this area.

The clinical aspects of sperm cell biology will also not be forgotten with major sessions on the male infertility, the causes and consequences of DNA damage in spermatozoa and recent advances in assisted reproductive technologies.

In addition, the basic biology and evolution of spermatozoa will be covered with mini-Symposia on the conservation of bioresources, evolutionary biology, the molecular regulation of sperm function, paternal impacts on development and sperm genomics.

All in all I can confidently promise a genuine Androfest in Australia in 2014 covering clinical, veterinary and basic science aspects of current sperm cell biology. I hope to see you there!
