The conference “Social Media Participatory Health” organised by the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) Social Media Working Group (SMWG) will provide analysis, trends, and insights to assist people and healthcare professionals better understand how Social Media (SM) are transforming health and medicine.


The SMWG aims to be IMIA’s vehicle for stakeholder engagement in SM. The membership is international, inclusive, and multidisciplinary. The IMIA SMWG engages members from the international informatics community, across sectors, to identify, explore, collaborate, and disseminate research and education on the use of SM for health.


Call for papers


The Social Media for Participatory Health 2016 (SMPH-2016) conference intends to be a venue that fosters collaboration in health SM interdisciplinary research. The conference organizers aim to bring together a wide multidisciplinary spectrum of researchers, startups and industry, healthcare professionals, patient advocates, public health agencies, NGOs, etc.


The first conference will be held as a satellite event at the Nursing Informatics 2016 Conference (NI2016) in Geneva, Switzerland, a major conference in health informatics co-organized by the IMIA. The topics of interest include, but are not limited to, and are grouped in the following tracks:


Participatory Health and Patient Empowerment through Social Media

Social Media for healthcare professionals and health organizations: including applications for professionals, hospitals, health communication and also management of medical emergencies and crisis response (e.g. earthquake).

“Gamification” of Social Media and Health

Social Media in Education and Health Behaviour Change

Mobile Health and Social Media: many health applications designed for professionals and patients include community and social media features

Big Data Analytics and Social Media for Health

Peer-review process


All submitted papers to the conference will go through a peer-review process with at least two reviewers for each submission. All submissions should follow the guidelines for authors available at the aforementioned website of the conference.


All accepted peer reviewed papers will be indexed in MEDLINE
