Event Overview
Welcome message:

The Kaufman Center for Heart Failure at Cleveland Clinic and the American Association for Thoracic Surgery present21st Century Treatment of Heart Failure: Synchronizing Surgical and Medical Therapies for Better Outcomes, an educational event for all health care providers who care for patients with heart failure.

Despite significant advances in heart failure management, including pharmacotherapy and devices, and extensive collaborative efforts among professional societies to disseminate evidence-based practice guidelines for management of chronic heart failure, morbidity and mortality remain high. More than one-third of patients with heart failure are re-hospitalized within weeks of hospital discharge. As our population ages, the number of patients afflicted with this disease and economic burden will grow.

Now in its 16th year, the Summit will feature a faculty of world-renowned cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons who will offer a clinically relevant review and discussion of current and future therapies for managing heart failure.

Focused sessions include optimization of medical therapy, management of acute decompensated heart failure, decision making with short- and long-term mechanical circulatory support, cardiac transplant, and critical updates and refining outcomes in the setting of destination therapy.

Who Should Attend

This program is intended for cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons, internists, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, perfusionists, and researchers involved in the medical and surgical management of patients with heart failure.

Objectives

As a result of attending this Summit, you will be able to do the following:

  • Summarize the 30-year history of innovations in medical and surgical management strategies and assess their impact on morbidity, mortality, and readmission rates
  • Utilize risk stratification tools to guide management strategies and ICD utilization for improving heart failure outcomes and lowering readmission rates
  • Transform performance measures into better care for heart failure patients
  • Define the specific population of heart failure patients who may benefit from catheter-based valve technologies
  • Assess thromboembolic and bleeding risks in patients with heart failure and atrial fibrillation; prescribe antithrombotic therapy accordingly
  • Evaluate current risk-stratifications and treatment strategies for patients presenting with acute heart failure
  • Summarize future directions for innovations in MCS devices
  • List the occurrence, risk, and outcomes of pump thrombosis
  • Describe strategies to manage pump thrombosis
  • Summarize the effect of health care reform on cost issues for patients with HF
