Dear Colleague,
It is with the greatest of pleasure that I invite you to the 23rd European Association for Cranio Maxillo-Facial Surgery (EACMFS) Congress, to be held in London in 2016.
We have enjoyed some remarkable congresses over the past few years in some of the great cities in Europe, but the local organising committee and I are committed to ensuring that our 2016 meeting in London is of the highest calibre and exceeds your expectations.
I am immensely proud to have been invited to host the 2016 congress. The organising committee are well on the way toward putting together an exciting programme, which we hope will appeal to all oral and maxillofacial surgeons, whether you are a generalist, or practising in one of the small sub-specialist areas. We will have a great cast of speakers, and will be introducing new and younger talent from around the world, but in particular from within Europe. There will plenty of opportunity for young surgeons and scientists to present their work alongside their experienced colleagues, and share in their ideas, both in oral presentations and electronic posters. We intend to run the congress with state of the art technology, and avoid as far as possible unnecessary paperwork. During 2016, we will be in the middle of the commemoration of The Great War, and so it is fitting that our opening scientific session and ceremony are themed around the lessons learned in conflicts around the world over the last 100 years and up to modern times. Our specialty in particular has developed and advanced through the experiences gained in managing victims of armed conflict.
The congress will be held in the recently refurbished and purpose built Queen Elizabeth II Centre, in the heart of Westminster, next door to Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament. Within 15 minutes walking distance of the congress centre, there are numerous hotels in every price range, from budget through to 5 star luxury. Transportation is available from all parts of the globe into the city’s 4 major airports, from which the city centre can be reached on public transport within 45 minutes. September is a great time to visit London, the school holidays are over, so the streets are not too busy, and the weather is usually warm and dry (although you should bring an umbrella just in case!). We will be making available opportunities for you to enjoy excursions to some of the historic and cultural attractions which London has to offer, and we hope you will take the opportunity to enjoy some of these and the many great and diverse restaurants. There will be a presidential reception after the opening ceremony, and as an optional extra, a dinner to be held on the Thursday evening in Greenwich Palace along the river Thames.
Please put the date in your diary now 13th-16th September 2016. We look forward to seeing you in London. The most important thing for any congress is that you all feel part of the congress and have the opportunity to learn and exchange ideas with colleagues and friends from around the world. The organising committee and I are dedicated in our ambition to ensure that your stay in London is memorable and that you enjoy a most stimulating congress.
With warmest regards,
Ian C Martin
