Vienna General Hospital #

The origins of Vienna General Hospital go back to Dr. Johann Franckh, who donated properties in 1686, after the end of the second Siege of Vienna, at the corridor Schaffernack for the establishment of a military hospital. However, since money was lacking for the establishment of the buildings, the disabled veterans were quartered, including families, in the Kontumazhof (epidemic hospital), already in existence. In 1693, Emperor Leopold I arranged the establishment of the large hospital. In 1697, the first ward was finished, into which 1042 persons were quartered. By 1724, 1740 persons lived there. Extending the complex was made possible by the will of Ferdinand Baron von Thavonat, who left his estate to disabled soldiers in 1726. The marriage or widow yard, now Thavonathof, was to be finished. Also, the side yards formed by Zwischentrakte, the patient yard (4.), Restaurant economics (5.) and craftsman center (7.) were established. During 1752 to 1774, further development occurred for the student yard (3.) and the house supervisor yard (6.). The inhabitants had to wear their own uniforms and received individual copper coins, which could be redeemed with the bakers in the complex, butchers, etc. The dissolution of the neighbouring cemetery came finally in 1834 of the 8th and 9th wards, in addition. On January 28, 1783, Emperor Joseph II visited the poorhouse. He stated the fact that the enormous plant served more as an accommodation for people who gained entry by virture of their connections. those who were the neediest, were still in need of care. Professor Dr. Joseph Quarin, who later became director, used a general hospital plan. On August 16, 1784, the opening took place. The hospital was responsible initially only for the attendance of patients; the remaining tasks of the hospitals were separate. To the hospital were attached a maternity ward, an orphanage , and a lunatic asylum. The Narrenturm was the first special building for the accommodation of mental patients. Particularly in the 19th century, Vienna General Hospital was the center of the Viennese Medical School, as one of the centers of medical research. Thus Ignaz Semmelweis made his observations of hygiene, and Karl Landsteiner discovered at the AKH the groups of blood types. The site of the old AKH is used as the main university campus of the University of Vienna, and includes the university's medical institutes as well as numerous humanities institutes and several catering trade enterprises and smaller enterprises.

Event Overview
Welcome message:

Dear members of our societies, dear colleagues and guests,

It is a great honor for us to invite you to the upcoming joint congress of the European Society for Artificial Organs (ESAO) and International Federation for Artificial Organs (IFAO).

This international and intercontinental meeting shall bring together researchers, developers and clinical specialists, which are involved in the development and application of artificial and bio-artificial organs. Our societies are engaged traditionally in the research and application of cardiovascular implants, blood purification devices, biomaterials and in biological organ repair and replacement. Additionally we want to emphasize this year also the functional stimulation of nerves and muscles and the development of intelligent limb prostheses. The motto of our congress “Artificial Organs in the Orchestra of Life” shall highlight that the creation and use of such organs is not only limited to scientific and medical questions. The progress in this field includes more and more aspects of “Quality of Life”, psychological, regulatory and economical aspects, ethics and user-friendliness in the viewpoint of different cultures and societies. Of course our meeting should provide for you also the experience of Vienna as a city of music and history. Within the congress we will have the opportunity to discover together this spirit and also some historical places and exhibitions.

We all have experienced the importance of worldwide knowledge exchange and complementary interaction between groups of different nations to obtain the ambitious therapies which our patients are urgently waiting for. This international and intercontinental networking has pushed us forward and is even more important in a world of growing borders and increasing conflicts and demarcations.

We are confident that our event will stimulate these important contacts and exchanges and cordially invite you to participate.

With best collegial regards,

Heinrich Schima

The Annual ESAO-Wichtig Award is the most important award for the ESAO to acknowledge the scientific achievements of young scientists. The award is given to the best peer-reviewed publication of scientists younger than 38 years working in the field of artificial organ research. A call for submission of candidate publications and authors will be issued in the ESAO web-site and in the International Journal for Artificial Organs (IJAO). A committee of scientist members of the ESAO will rate the submitted publications and will select the winner. The winner will receive a check of 2,500 Euro and a certificate, and will be given the possibility to briefly present the work done in the Award ceremony. The ESAO is thankful to Wichtig International for sponsoring this award. For application details see the society website
