About the Call for Abstracts
The ASDP Call for Abstracts offers three categories of abstract submissions for participants interested in presenting their abstract(s) in an educational session at the Annual Meeting.
- The General Abstract category is open to all physicians who practice dermatopathology, including residents and fellows. Abstracts will be selected for either oral or poster presentation.
- The Duel in Dermatopathology is an oral abstract competition designed especially for residents in dermatology and pathology. Duel abstracts not selected for the competition will be automatically considered for poster presentation.
- The Dermatopathology Fellows Abstract category is open to fellows in a dermatopathology training program. Abstracts will be selected for either oral or poster presentation.
There is no limit on the number of abstracts per submitter. All abstracts should be written with the goal of bringing new or updated information to attendees or providing an organized review of older data. The Continuing Education and Research Committee will select all abstract presentations through a blinded review process. Abstract criteria are subject to annual review.
Abstract Submission Criteria
Abstract submissions must adhere to the published submission criteria:
- Abstract content must not have been accepted for publication, published or previously presented at another meeting. If work has been published at the time of presentation, this information must be disclosed at the time of presentation.
- The same abstract may not be submitted in more than one category. Submissions in the General, Duel and Fellow abstract categories will be automatically considered for a poster if not accepted as an oral presentation. Submissions to the General abstract category may be made as “poster-only” for those not wanting to be considered for oral presentation.
- The subject material must be dermatopathology-related, medically and scientifically valid, and should contain new information not previously reported or novel information about the pathophysiology or diagnosis that enhances the understanding of the disease.
- Abstract titles must be clear and accurately reflect the content of the abstract.
- The abstract must adequately summarize the key scientific content of the presentation.
- The hypothesis should be clearly stated.
- Scientific methods must be sound and clearly articulated.
- Appropriate data and observations should be clearly presented.
- Results must be clearly presented and conclusions must accurately reflect the results and directly address the hypothesis.
- Institutions and personal or institutional identifiers must not be referenced in the abstract.
- Potential conflicts of interest must be disclosed at the time of abstract submission and presentation, and must not introduce bias in the study design.
- The content must be free of grammatical and spelling errors.
- Non-scientific abstracts will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
Abstract Submission Instructions
- Abstracts must be submitted online at www.asdp.org/abstractsubmission. Paper abstracts will not be accepted.
- From the ASDP Home Page, click on “ASDP Annual Meeting” and select “Abstracts” from the menu in the left margin.
- Be sure to read the instructions before entering your abstract online.
- Select the abstract category for which you are submitting, i.e. General Abstract, Duel in Dermatopathology or Dermatopathology Fellows.
- Abstract text must not to exceed 2,000 characters (approximately 250 words).
- Upon successful submission of an abstract, a confirmation will be emailed to you. Be sure to addinfo@asdp.org to your email address book to ensure you receive our confirmation and notification emails.
- Late submissions will not be accepted.
- Notification of acceptance will be sent via email. If you do not receive an email confirmation after submitting your abstract or an email notice of acceptance after the review process, notify ASDP at aalscher@asdp.org.
- Abstracts accepted for oral or poster presentation will be published electronically in the Abstract Book and in the online version of the January issue of the Journal of Cutaneous Pathology*.

Abstract Submission Category Descriptions
General Abstract Category
Deadline for Submission: May 15, 2014
- Open to all physicians.
- Abstracts must be extraordinary case reports, clinical studies or basic science.
Duel in Dermatopathology Resident Abstract Competition
Deadline for Submission: May 15, 2014
- Open only to dermatology and pathology residents. Residents submitting abstracts in this category must be residents at the time of presentation.
- Abstracts must describe a single case report, including clinical and pathologic findings.
Dermatopathology Fellows Abstract Category
Deadline for Submission: August 15, 2014
- Open only to fellows in a dermatopathology training program. Dermatopathology fellows submitting abstracts in this category must be enrolled in a fellowship training program at the time of presentation.
- Abstracts must be extraordinary case reports, clinical studies or basic science.
- Dermatopathology fellows abstracts will be accepted between July 1-August 15, 2014.
Abstract Evaluation Criteria
Abstracts will be evaluated based on the submission criteria using a seven-point scale ranging from poor (1) to outstanding (7). Abstracts will be blind reviewed by all members of the Continuing Education and Research Committee, and the average score will be used to rank the priority of the presentation.
Abstracts will be evaluated using the following criteria:
- Outstanding and Excellent:
- strong data and conclusions
- excellent, error-free writing
- original content/new information
- exceptional teaching value
- Very Good:
- strong data and conclusions
- no errors
- well-written, with good detail and organization
- unusual or rare content
- Average:
- valid to solid data and conclusions
- no errors
- logical to strong writing with detail
- no novel material/relatively common entity or somewhat unusual material
- Fair and Poor:
- weak, incomplete or questionable validity of data and/or conclusions
- minor to significant errors
- weak to poor writing
- common or inconsequential material
Abstract Selection Process
If your abstract is not selected for an oral presentation, it will automatically be considered for a poster presentation. The Continuing Education and Research Committee reserves the right to assign oral presentations as appropriate. Poster presenters must attend the ASDP 51st Annual Meeting and attend the poster defense session to which their poster is assigned. This year, there will be two poster sessions.
Poster Defense Sessions
Poster Defense Session #1: Friday, November 7: 4:15 p.m. – 4:45 p.m.
Poster Defense Session #2: Saturday, November 8: 10:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.
Poster presenters should check for times and locations in the meeting program distributed at the annual meeting.
Notification of Acceptance
All notifications will be sent by email. It is the submitter’s responsibility to ensure his/her email address is correct and current. ASDP is not responsible for confirmations not received due to incorrect contact information. An email confirmation will be sent upon successful submission of an abstract. A separate email indicating the status of General and Duel abstract acceptance will be sent before August 1. Dermatopathology Fellows will be notified of their abstract acceptance in early September.
If your abstract is accepted for poster presentation, you will be notified of your assigned poster session and poster number in mid-September. It is very important that you attend your assigned Poster Defense Session.
All oral and poster abstract presenters will be asked to confirm receipt of their notification email and officially accept the invitation to present their abstract. Meeting Registration
All presenters (oral and poster) are required to pay the meeting registration fee. The Annual Meeting Preliminary Program will be published online and online registration will be available in June. For up-to-date meeting information, visit the ASDP meeting website often at www.asdp.org/AM14.
About Oral Presentations
Speakers must read the Speaker Guidelines if their abstract is accepted for oral presentation and can download guidelines from the ASDP website. It is very important that speakers keep within the allotted time. Only USB flash disks will be supported. Speakers will not be permitted to hook up laptops to the LCD projector.Presenters must give their presentation media to the A/V technician located in the Speaker Ready Room one day prior to the start of the session in which they are speaking. Speakers must disclose financial relationships and discussion of any unlabeled/investigational use of a commercial product immediately prior to their presentation verbally and on a presentation slide. Speakers must also ensure that presentations are free of commercial bias and that any information regarding commercial products/services is based on scientific methods generally accepted by the medical community.
About Poster Presentations
(3’10” x 3’10” only)
Poster presenters must read the Poster Presentation Guidelines if their abstract is accepted for poster presentation and can download guidelines from the ASDP website. Poster presentations should not exceed 3 feet 10 inches (1.16m) high and 3 feet 10 inches (1.16m) long. Posters larger than 3’10” X 3’10” will be removed from the poster viewing session and will not have their abstract published in the Journal of Cutaneous Pathology (JCP). Posters larger than 3’10” X 3’10” will also be disqualified from consideration in the Physician-in-Training Award program if eligible.
All poster presenters are required to display disclosures of financial relationships and discussion of any unlabeled/investigational use of a commercial product directly on posters. This is required to be a minimum of 14 point font size. Poster boards will be set and numbered at the annual meeting. Accepted poster presenters will be notified of their assigned poster number and should set up their own posters using their own push-pins. At the conclusion of the poster session, it is the presenter’s responsibility to remove the poster from the board. Unclaimed posters will be discarded at the end of the poster session.
Physician-in-Training Awards
Physicians-in-Training (residents and fellows-in-training) will be able to nominate one of their submitted abstracts to be considered for the Physician-in-Training Award. The “Yes, please consider this abstract for the Physician-in-Training Award” should be selected at the time of abstract submission and the abstract should be designated as either a case report or study (including research studies and case series).
Physicians-in-Training whose abstracts are accepted for presentation, regardless of abstract category (General, Duel or Dermatopathology Fellow) will be considered for the Physician-In-Training Award. Physician-in-Training Awards will be presented for the best oral and poster presentations. Physicians-in-Training who submit abstracts in the General Abstract Program should be the first author and presenter of the abstract. Winners of the Duel in Dermatopathology Resident Competition will not be eligible for a Physician-in-Training Award.
The Peer Review Committee will use the following criteria to evaluate presentations eligible for the Physician-in-Training Awards:
- Case reports will be judged on the following criteria:
- novelty
- teaching value
- impact, potential to change practice
- Studies will be judged on the following criteria:
- conclusions supported by data
- statistical design and analysis
- impact, potential to change practice or influence future research
- All presentations will also be judged on execution, taking into account:
- quality of graphics and images
- accuracy (data accuracy, typos)
- clarity and quality of presentation
