Event Overview
Welcome message:

Dear Colleague,

The International Association for Women’s Mental Health, a multidisciplinary group that has the mission of improving the mental health of women throughout the world, expanding the fund of knowledge about Women's Mental Health and promoting gender-sensitive and autonomy-enhancing mental health services for women, cordially invites you to participate in the 6th World Congress on Women’s Mental Health to be held in Tokyo, March 22 to 25, 2015, in conjunction with the Institute of Women’s Mental Health, Tokyo Women’s Medical University.

The congress is expected to attract, as our previous meetings (Berlin 2001, Wahington DC 2004, Melbourne 2008, Madrid 2011 and Lima 2013) did, a large number of internationally renowned experts in the field, including, psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, occupational therapists, social workers, general practitioners and other women’s health professionals, researchers, students, decision makers, consumers and their families, who will share their knowledge and experiences about the best ways to improve women’s wellbeing.

Biological, psychosocial, public health and political aspects of health care will be discussed from the perspectives of researchers and clinicians from different regions of the world. This multidisciplinary and culturally diverse atmosphere should also provide an excellent chance for networking and formulating new exciting research and intervention projects for the future.

The success of a scientific meeting lies in the excellence of the attendees and the rigor of their research; but it also depends on the diversity and novelty of the questions asked after the meeting. We would like, on behalf of IAWMH, to invite you to come to Tokyo in 2015 and join us in this exciting opportunity to learn and grow together.

I am very happy to have been given the chance to hold the 6th World Congress on Women’s Mental Health in Tokyo—during the season when all living creatures become more vigorous and the cherry trees are in bloom—and to contribute to the maintenance and improvement of women’s mental health. In recent years, women’s mental health is the subject of great interest not only in the field of medical care, but also from the viewpoint of stimulating the economy. Yet depression continues growing on the global scale, and mental disorders have entered the top five diseases in Japan. Women’s lifetime disease prevalence for depression is roughly double that of men, and posttraumatic stress disorder is experienced by two to four times more women than men. Moreover, various types of research have indicated that mothers’ mental health issues have significant impacts on social life as a whole, including child raising and the overall mental and physical health of families.

At this congress, mental health problems frequently experienced by women—exemplified by depression—will be discussed from traditional viewpoints such as epidemiology, psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, and endocrinology, including female hormones. In addition, focus will also be placed in a proactive way on the many types of trauma experienced by women, including spousal violence, child abuse, and sexual violence. Moreover, this congress will search for a path towards helping women become more resilient—namely, recovery from mental and physical health issues—towards the next generation. We believe it has great social significance for this reason.

We are very honored to be given the opportunity to hold the first IAWMH World Congress in Asia. Our goal is to work together to create a congress where people can have fun learning and discussing, and we look forward to the active participation of many people.
