Event Overview
Welcome message:

ANKLE AND FOOT are two anatomical districts closely related to each other and frequent site of painful and disabling pathology both traumatic and degenerative

ANKLEThe ankle joint is frequently affected by acute traumatic events during many sports. In sports such as basketball, volleyball, tennis, soccer, handball and some disciplines of athletics, sprained ankle traumas can be considered as true pathologies of the athlete. Epidemiological studies have shown that about 20% of all sprains are affected by the ankle and in some sports such as basketball and volleyball exceed 30%. In calcium 30-40% of acute ligand capsule lesions evolve into chronic instabilities. For this reason there are invalidating outcomes characterized by persistent pain, swelling of the ankle due to small efforts, instability and relapses, not only to the resumption of activity, but also in walking on rugged terrain. In Britain it is estimated that about 300,000 ankle sprains occur annually, while in the United States about 1 million people present themselves to the doctor for an ankle injury.

FOOTAmong all the various diseases that can affect the foot, there are certainly some more common and widespread than others, which are instead more rare and delicate. Certain conditions are currently very frequent in Italy, just think that the hallux valgus, the classic "onion" of the foot, affects about 40% of the population. Precisely this frequency of these foot pathologies has caused an underestimation of the problem by the patients, which tend to minimize the seriousness of the situation. The INAIL National Institute for Occupational Accident Insurance reports that foot pathologies are a frequent cause of injury with consequent abstention from work. The most usual of pathologies is undoubtedly that of hallux valgus, which is nothing but the lateral deviation of metatarsal bone, which in the long run can cause damage to posture and ambulation, as well as discomfort and pain due to contact with the shoe. The only really effective therapy to solve the problem is the surgical one that consists of an intervention that cuts, moves and realigns the metatarsus and sometimes the phalanx. The foot can thus return to its normal conformation, obviously with the necessary post-operative checks. Still on the subject of big toe, as not to mention the rigid toe, a circumstance in which the big toe no longer moves and is in pain. This particular arthritis can be treated with different methods depending on the severity of the case. Without a doubt the most worrying cases require surgical intervention. Another very common pathology is Morton's neuroma, which affects the third and fourth metatarsals. It is a swelling of the nerve of the sole of the foot which causes acute and persistent pain. Here, too, surgical intervention can be performed by decompressing the nerve from the adhesions that hindered it. The flat foot is that specific conformation of the foot that lies on a greater support surface, producing a deformation of the sole of the foot. This condition causes pain as well as collapse to the inside of the foot, which causes problems with walking and posture. This deviation can be corrected with surgery, lifting the inner arch of the foot. Other diseases of the foot that require surgery are: Haglund's disease, which involves the back of the foot, the heel and the Achilles tendon, the metatarsalgia, dense and constant pain at the toes, hammer toes, a deformation of the fingers that curl causing pain and calluses. In this distance learning project, the expert, Prof Marco Guelfi, specialist in Orthopedics and Trauma- tology, former President of the Italian Society of Ankle and Foot (SICP) and member of the Board of the European Society, will present some videos of the main surgical interventions. at the ankle and foot level, with a commentary on the salient steps.
