Event Overview
Welcome message:

This activity provides health care educators with the skills needed to make use of current technology and social medial tools to support teaching and learning. Participants learn how to use technology to create learning environments and materials, filters to manage information overload and customize online searchable repositories. In short, the course teaches how to leverage Web 2.0 and social medial tools to create professional learning networks.

Applicants will be notified of admission decisions on or about July 20, 2013.

This Harvard Macy Institute program is designed for a diverse group of academic faculty, health care educators, and administrators who are actively engaged in the training of students, residents, and faculty. Participants, working in teams guided by IT specialists and course faculty, will apply the skills learned during the program as they develop a 10-12 minute interactive online module for potential use at their home institution. As with each educational offering of the Harvard Macy Institute, the success of this program for each participant depends on a close and honest examination of organizational values, as well as the ability and willingness to collaborate with other attendees and program faculty.

Applying readily available technologies and Web 2.0 and social media tools to:

  • Enhance, support and supplement in-class teaching
  • Create stand-alone online educational modules
  • Leverage use of mobile devices for learning and teaching
  • Support remote and asynchronous collaboration
  • Create and support communities of inquiry and practice

This course will be organized around the following threads:

  • Asynchronous and online learning - Creating an eLearning module using an open source virtual learning environment - Moodle.
  • Classroom technology for interactive learning - Advanced PowerPoint, Audience Response Systems - use of classroom clickers vs. online ARS tools.
  • Managing information - Combat information over-load by creating filters and encoding digital information in external memory for easy search and retrieval- Real Simple Syndication (RSS) and Social Bookmarking and annotation.
