CARBAPENEMASES IN ENTEROBACTERIACEAE: CHALLENGES & PREPAREDNESS
The prevalence of multidrug-resistant Enterobacteriaceae that produce carbapenemases (CRE) is steadily increasing worldwide, approaching or even attaining the endemicity threshold in many countries. Rapid and reliable
CRE detection is crucial for effective patient management, as well as for infection prevention and for control and surveillance purposes. The proposed course will debate how to effectively detect carbapenemases in routine testing, and how to report their presence to clincians. These goals will be pursued by providing the participants with the basic, integrated elements necessary for understanding the nature of carbapenemases, as well as the need for correct identification and reporting. Lectures will be followed by practical demonstrations of the main diagnostic techniques. Guidelines for appropriate infection control and basic options for clinical treatment are also part of the main scope of this course.
