Event Overview
Welcome message:

In recent years more and more teenage children have been admitted to PICUs following ingestion of unknown quantities of drugs known on the street as Ecstasy/Molly, GBH, Roofies, Special K and others. Because these substances are not subject to the stringent quality control that pharmaceuticals are, it’s often impossible to know exactly what the child has ingested and what to expect. Their physiological responses may change rapidly, creating challenges in treating them. This presentation will focus on two case studies, with emphasis on identifying the most likely agent and supportive management of physiologic manifestations in the PICU. Discussion of addiction-related treatment is beyond the scope of this session.

Identify 4 classes of rave or club drugs now being seen in PICUs.

Explain common effects of each class.

Describe treatment of the critical effects of 3,4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine (MDMA) and gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB).
