This comprehensive lecture explores the role of the primary care team in helping to reduce the incidence of oral cancer. Emphasis is given to the role of the primary care dental team both during and posttreatment, for both prevention of oral disease and rehabilitation

Learning objectives
Understand the incidence, aetiology and presentation of oral cancer
Understand the need for early diagnosis and referral of cases of oral cancer or potentially malignant lesions using correct referral pathways
Be aware of the treatment pathways and role of the secondary care team in management of patients with oral cancer
Be aware of the need for joint working at the primary/secondary care interface to give optimum care to patients with oral cancer.
Andrew Baldwin, Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, Manchester
Andrew qualified in dentistry in Liverpool (1983) and medicine/surgery in Manchester (1994). Fellowships of the Royal College of Surgeons of both England and Edinburgh were obtained, and higher surgical training pathway completed in the North West region, before he was appointed as Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon in 2003 at Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.
Andrew undertakes all aspects of oral and maxillofacial surgery, but has a specialist interest in head and neck oncology with reconstructive surgery, and salivary gland disease. For ten years he led the Head and Neck Oncology service within his NHS Trust, and sat on the Head and Neck Clinical Subgroup for Greater Manchester and Cheshire. Currently, he is the Clinical Director for the Oral & Maxillofacial & Plastic Surgery Directorate.
In addition to his clinical work, Andrew has a strong interest in medical education. He regularly teaches undergraduate medical and dental students at The University of Manchester, and is involved in postgraduate education with the North West Deanery. He also examines for The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh nationally and internationally.
