The CCIB - Centre de Convencions Internacional de Barcelona came into being in 2004 with the 2004 Universal Forum of Cultures. Following the Forum, management of the Convention Centre was subsequently awarded to GL events CCIB SL, a company created specifically for this purpose. The corporate form of the CCIB is therefore that of a Limited Liability Company (LLC), with the following shareholder structure: GL events: 80% Barcelona City Council: 12% Association of Barcelona Hoteliers: 8% GL events, established in Lyon in 1978, is a world leader in the events sector. In 2011, this group operated a global network of 91 event locations, employed a workforce of 3,700 and generated turnover of 783 million euros. The CCIB’s client profile is composed of three main types: Agencies specialised in staging events for other organisations Private companies which organise an event directly Associations active in specific fields of the knowledge sector. At the CCIB we are able to organise events of any type, whether local or international. Given the characteristics of the Convention Centre, however, we offer outstanding capacity for the organisation of large-scale events with a global reach. These also have a positive impact on the city of Barcelona regarding hotel occupation, catering and other services related to the event. In this regard, 83% of our turnover is generated by international events attended by visitors from all over the world. It is also noteworthy that 42% of our clients are from other countries. We would like to offer you a selection of the events organised by the CCIB since it opened for business up to 2011, as well as - with the kind permission of the respective organisers - notable events already confirmed for the future.

The ESMO World Congress on Gastrointestinal Cancer is dedicated to all aspects of gastrointestinal cancers including Esophageal Cancer, Colon Cancer, Liver Cancer, Gastric Cancer, Rectal Cancer, Pancreatic Cancer and Others.

The ESMO World Congress on Gastrointestinal Cancer focuses on the care of patients with gastrointestinal cancer, including diagnosis, screening, the management options for common and uncommon tumors.

Participants interested in presenting data should submit abstracts online athttp://owpm.net/abstracts/WGI/ by 23:59 EST on 3 March 2014. Abstracts are subject to acceptance by the Scientific Committee. Once accepted, abstracts will be published in a supplement of Annals of Oncology and scheduled for oral or poster presentation. Acceptance notifications and guidelines for poster presentation will be sent on 15 April 2014. Authors of accepted abstracts who have not registered will have until 15 May 2014 to do so at the early registration rate. After this date, abstracts without registered presenters will be disregarded and not included in the publication.

Abstracts will be accepted in the following categories, and the author should indicate it as either BASIC or CLINICAL by checking the appropriate box in the online submission system:

    • published in any journal, or on any web site before 25 June 2014, nor
    • presented at any national or international scientific conference prior to 25 June 2014
    • Accepted format: Word document format, 9 point Arial font, 500 word count limit
    • Use a concise title
    • List affiliations of author(s) as briefly as possible, with city, province and country
    • Use standard and well-accepted abbreviations
    • When using references, use standard and well-accepted formats
    • Abstract content should be single-spaced and typed in lower case
  • Abstracts shall be of original research and contain a concise statement of study aim
  • Please include and indicate in bold the following four (4) parts of your abstract: Background, Method, Results, and Conclusion(s). Conclusions must be supported by your results and summarized within your abstract at the time of submission. Results “to be completed” and/or conclusions “to be discussed” are not acceptable.
Late-Breaking Abstracts

The Congress late-breaking policy allows the submission of late-breaking abstracts that include results of phase III studies or potentially practice-changing results for which no preliminary data are available at the time of the abstract submission deadline.

An abstract template should be submitted by the regular abstract deadline (3 March). The template should include: title, author list, and a description of the study. A final abstract version must be submitted by 20 May and will be published in a supplement of the Annals of Oncology. Once the final version is available please email wgiabstracts@imedex.com Â so we can provide you with late-breaking abstract submission instructions.

Developing Nations Travel Awards

A limited number of travel awards are available for investigators from developing nations. Awards are available to investigators from the countries indicated in the 2013 World Bank List of Economies as Low Income or Lower-Middle Income Economies. The complete list can be found athttp://web.worldbank.org .  

These awards will consist of registration for the 2014 Congress and a grant in the amount of €2000 to cover airfare and hotel, given to the recipient at the Congress. Airfare can be purchased by Imedex and deducted from this amount, if needed. If you have questions about this information, please contact Imedex.

How to Apply for Developing Nations Travel Awards:
  • The candidate must submit an abstract to the ESMO 16th World Congress on Gastrointestinal Cancer in the usual manner, indicating that the abstract is to be considered for the Developing Nations Award
  • The candidate must be the first author of the submitted abstract
  • The work must not have been presented or published before the date of the ESMO 16th World Congress on Gastrointestinal Cancer
  • Abstracts must be submitted on schedule
  • Late-Breaking abstracts are not eligible for consideration for the Developing Nations Travel Grant Award
  • Candidates should submit:
    • An extended abstract
    • A Curriculum Vitae
    • A 1-3 page description of their interests and current research in gastrointestinal cancer signed and approved by their department chair

The Scientific Committee will select the award winners on the basis of the scientific content of the abstract. Winners will be notified in April 2014. The Developing Nations Travel Grant Award is non-transferable; only the first author of the selected abstracts will receive the award.

    • A speaker will discuss poster during Poster Discussion Session. The author can also present a poster.  Authors MUST send PowerPoint slides by 13 June.

    • Author is assigned a designated time to give a 12 minute presentation during main meeting (10 minute talk plus 2 minutes for questions).  Slides are due by June 13.  Authors can also present poster.
