Patients presenting with an acute ischemic stroke must be identified quickly so the stroke team can be engaged and emergent care provided. From the emergent phase in the ED to the diagnostic/operative phase in Radiology/OR to the ICU, nurses must be knowledgeable and involved in the care of the acute stroke patient. Progressive Care and ICU nurses must know the standards for stroke centers, evidenced-based literature for intervening with stroke patients and the continuum of care after the patient leaves the ICU to the progressive care unit. Nurses must also know the latest disease-specific indicators and develop strategies to meet them. This session focuses on the hyperacute ischemic stroke patient including assessing, intervening with thrombolytics with the goal to deliver IV tPA in under 60 minutes, preparing for possible interventional treatment and preventing complications.
Learning Objectives:
• Identify the pathophysiologic changes associated with acute ischemic stroke and the necessary interventions to treat stroke patients rapidly
• Relate the evidence-based recommendations for primary stroke centers from the ASA/JCAHO as well as practice protocols for stroke care.
• Using case studies, apply the information presented on stroke management to change practice in your own hospital.
