Parador De Oropesa #

OROPESA, SPAIN
The Parador Museo de Oropesa is a beautiful building that transmits its history and legends through spectacular function rooms, columns and arcades, an imposing courtyard and the enigmatic keep. It was once the ancestral home of the Álvarez de Toledo family, counts of Oropesa, and in past times sheltered soldiers, religious persons and nobles. In 1930, it was converted into the first historic Parador in the government-owned chain, paving the way for a network of lodgings located in castles, palaces, convents and monasteries which is unique in the world. A stay at the hotel becomes a date with history in an enticing location where you can relax and enjoy the spectacular views of the Sierra de Gredos mountains and excellent cuisine.

Event Overview
Welcome message:

The eye is an organ of extreme perfection” said Charles Darwin, concerned that his theories of evolution may falter for such a finely tuned organ, which exists in many different forms in the animal kingdom.  The vertebrate eye forms as an extension of the developing brain; with its intricate retinal architecture it provides a uniquely accessible system to study neural development and function.  Model organisms give us detailed insight into the mechanisms of eye development, while modern technology allows us to explore human visual function in detail, with non-invasive methods. Abnormalities of eye development and function are also readily documented.  Molecular genetic approaches permit the identification of genes implicated in genetic eye diseases and elucidation of the regulatory and signalling pathways necessary for eye development and regeneration. Components of such complex gene networks are highly conserved in evolution.  Different model systems are useful for studying different aspects of eye development and function – often at single cell resolution, capable of delivering a coherent picture of the process.  New genomic approaches provide tools to understand phenotypic variation in genetic eye disease and, to study epigenetic changes and gene-environment interactions. Insight into the molecular basis of eye development and disease provides new approaches for targeted treatments. These special features of the eye provide our expert speakers with a great platform to present the story and their latest discoveries and ideas, with many facets including the application of the latest technologies in molecular developmental biology and big data genomic studies.

This 4 day meeting, held in the beautiful Hotel Parador Oropesa in Spain, will provide ample opportunities for discussion with a dozen or more contributed talks selected from registrants, a poster session, poster highlights and student prizes.

The Parador Oropesa is majestic in every sense of the word. Located in the beautiful Castillian countryside to the west of Madrid; it is spacious, elegant, and imposing. Set in the former ancestral home of the Counts of Oropesa and located in the shadow of the Sierra de Gredos mountains, over the centuries, its Medieval cloisters and towers have accommodated aristocracy, bishops and soldiers.

There are two castles separated by an immense wall that is crowned by a magnificent machicolated parapet and an awesome tower. At one time the castle complex was controlled by Don Francisco de Toledo – Duke of Alba, and the Viceroy of Peru.  He and later lords added an extended set of palatial rooms and quarters to create what remains today.

The bedrooms are large and spacious with simple Castilian styled, dark wood furniture, with all rooms offer inspiring views – either to the castle tower, the Gredos plains, or the Gredos peaks. There are fine views from any table in the restaurant, with those located against the glass wall on the north side offering particularly stunning panoramic views.

Submission Info

Abstracts may be submitted for 2 seperate categories – talk or poster.

Talk – At each conference, several presentation slots are available for the chairs to fill following review of the abstracts submitted. Normally, this equates to a 15 minute presentation although in some circumstances more time may be allocated. This offers a fantastic opportunity to present your research to a distinguished audience of your peers and we encourage delegates from all levels of academic or industrial backgrounds to compete for places.

If you wish to be considered for one of these slots, please select the ‘Talk’ option.

Poster – We also run a ‘Poster Session’ at each conference. During this session every attendee is encouraged to display an portrait-oriented A0 sized  (1189×841 mm – 46.8×33.1 inch) poster depicting their research. Delegates are free to view and discuss the content with the authors in a relaxed environment while offering fantastic networking opportunities, collaborations to be developed, ideas to be exchanged and many other advantages for those taking part.

When printing your poster, please ensure it does not exceed A0 in size and be portrait in orientation. If measurements exceed this size, we cannot guarantee that your poster will be displayed.

Further, a ‘Poster Highlight’ session in the main programme allows for several of the Poster Abstract authors to be offered short presentations – usually 3-5 minutes. This presents an opportunity for authors to briefly surmise the core points of their work in a short presentation to all conference attendees. We believe this dual mode of presentation (oral plus poster presentation) will contribute to a better communication between poster presenters and conference delegates.

If you wish to be included in the poster session and considered for one of the ‘Poster Highlight’  slots, please select the ‘Poster’ option.
