Event Overview
Welcome message:
Dear colleagues,

the ongoing social change in Germany is affecting the expectations and demands related to the diagnosis, treatment and care of mental illnesses. Although increasing life expectancy is associated with a gain in healthy life years, it is also accompanied by an increase in illnesses of older age, such as dementias, age-related depression, age-related psychoses and anxiety disorders. Many older people with mental illnesses have comorbid somatic diseases and live in difficult social conditions. consequently, age-sensitive drugs, psychotherapeutic and psychosocial treatment procedures and low-threshold, cross-sectoral care offerings need to be increasingly developed and expanded. Particularly psychosocial medicine will be called upon to maintain people’s independence into a high age through prevention and treatment. The improvement of psychiatric-psychotherapeutic treatment reduces the need for and burden of care.

At the same time, middle-aged people are under increasing pressure, because they carry the rising costs of the pension and health care systems. This constitutes an additional risk for inability to continue working or find employment because of mental illness and must be countered through greater investments in prevention and early recognition and intervention. This change is also highly relevant for future doctors, because fewer and fewer doctors will be responsible for more and more patients. For the above reasons, ‘Psychosocial medicine in times of demographic change’ will be the thematic focus of the DGPPN Congress 2014.

Biomedical basic research has performed good preparatory work for the development  of targeted prevention and treatment strategies for older people. Through translational research, our understanding of the brain, its ageing process and resilience reserves will expand today’s treatment possibilities significantly. This applies in particular to Alzheimer’s Disease. The status and chances associated with this development will be an additional focus of the DGPPN Congress.

The development taking place in society is also giving rise to urgent ethical questions in medicine. How can older people’s dignity and autonomy be protected in case of chronic illness? What should be prioritised as resources become ever less available – how much healing and how much supportive medicine is required? How can we support the self-determination of cognitively impaired people? How much are we prepared to spend on adequate care for people with dementia?

We are looking forward to welcome you to the DGPPN Congress 2014.

With best regards
Prof. Dr. med. Wolfgang Maier
President of the DGPPN
