I am delighted to be making the opening Keynote presentation at the 2nd Digital Pathology Congress in Philadelphia this July.


Digital pathology greatly facilitates the sharing of cases so that the right case is seen by the right pathologist with expertise in that area, particularly helping under-served areas. This translates to better patient outcomes through better accuracy and more reproducible diagnoses, often with with the aid of computer–assisted tools. While it is true that in the USA FDA regulations have prevented the use of digital pathology systems for primary diagnosis it is also true that in Europe, true interoperability and standardization of digital pathology technology have been difficult to achieve. The industry is currently at a crossroads where vendors, who are producing different instruments, software and file formats, will need to standardize their offerings. By promoting standardization and gaining improved interoperability we will all benefit from more widespread adoption of digital pathology.


That said, the reason Pathologists are continuing to invest in digital pathology is to reap the value of a digital platform, such as the benefits of image analysis. Computer aided diagnostic tools will enable pathology to transition from a manual and qualitative field to an automated and quantitative science. However, right now there are very few image analysis tools that can be used in routine clinical practice. In my presentation I will cover the readiness of image analysis and highlight the key steps that need to be taken to meet the demand for current clinical practice.
