By Road

Newcastle is located 162 km and only 2 hours drive north of Sydney.  Newcastle is only a 50 minute drive to the Hunter Valley or Port Stephens.

If you are coming to Newcastle from the North, follow the Pacific Highway directly into the City Centre.  If you are coming from Sydney or the South, follow the F3 Freeway, taking the Newcastle Link Road exit. If you are coming from the West, there are two access points into Newcastle, those being the New England Highway and the Golden Highway.

Newcastle Airport, named Major Airport of the Year by the Australia Airports Association, is only a 30 minute drive from Newcastle’s CBD.  With regular services to major cities including Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, Newcastle Airport is serviced by Jetstar, Virgin Australia and QantasLink, as well as a number of regional airlines.


The airport is serviced by all major car rental companies, Newcastle Taxi Service and a bus service that runs directly into Newcastle.

Airport Group Transfers

Airport Transfers have been arranged for those arriving into Newcastle Airport on Thursday 12th September 2013.  Group pick up times are detailed below and the coach will drop you to one of four destinations including Newcastle City Hall, Crowne Plaza, Hotel Ibis and Chifley Apartments.  Please note the coach cannot drop at you at other accommodation properties, other than those listed above, due to a strict pick up schedule.  If you wish to book a seat on the coach, please select your preferred time as part of the registration process. Coach Transfers are provided from Newcastle Airport only, and will not be available from Rail Stations or any other arrival points.

 

There is a nominal of $20 each way to book a seat on the transfer.  All shuttle transfers need to be confirmed by Friday 30 August 2013.  Cancellations that occur after this date are non-refundable.

State Transit operates a regular public service throughout Newcastle, offering a free fare zone within Newcastle inner city from 7am – 6pm.  This service links all three Conference accommodation options within the CBD with the Newcastle City Hall.

Newcastle is part of the CityRail network with multiple stations positioned around the city centre.  Frequent daily return services are available heading south on the Newcastle/Central Coast network with access to Lake Macquarie, The Central Coast, Sydney and surrounding suburbs.  Heading North, the rail network services the Lower and Upper Hunter regions.


CountryLink trains connect Newcastle to Sydney, Brisbane and many other country centres. The trains are designed for comfortable long distance travelling, with a regular service in and out of Newcastle’s Broadmeadow Train Station.

On behalf of the NSW Organising Committee of the Internal Medicine Society of Australia and New Zealand, we extend a warm invitation to join us at the IMSANZ Annual Scientific Meeting 2013. This premier Conference for Internal Medicine in Australia will be held in Newcastle from 13-15 September 2013, at the magnificent Newcastle City Hall.

 

The Conference theme, The Practical Physician, reflects the growing shift from the delivery of specialist and hospital health care in Australia towards the unique combination of knowledge, training and skills that defines the modern general physician.

 

The Conference encompasses a comprehensive range of topics and keynote speakers that promises to attract around 200 key attendees including Consulting Physicians in General Internal Medicine, Advanced Trainees, Doctors training across a wide range of sub-specialities, together with Nurses and Allied Health Professionals.

 

An impressive line-up of experts in science, research and clinical application will be invited to explore the Conference themes and their inter-relationship, broaching topics including Asthma/COPD, Aged Care, Neurology/Stroke, Gastroenterology, Diabetes, Viral Hepatitis, Bariatrics, Rural and Remote Practices.

 

The Conference content will be of high quality and provide examples of the productive collaboration between Academia and Industry, incorporating three days of both plenary and breakout sessions, along with a Welcome Reception and Conference Dinner, allowing plenty of time to network and connect with colleagues old and new.

Accommodation:

The Conference Secretariat will book accommodation on your behalf. A requirement of the hotels is that all bookings
include your credit card details. These credit card details will be forwarded to your selected hotel as a guarantee. Please
note that one nights accommodation will be charged to the provided credit card on Monday 12 August 2013, by the
hotel, as a deposit to secure the booking. You will be responsible for the balance of your account when checking in/out
from the selected hotel. Please refer to the conference website and accommodation PDF’s for further details on
accommodation booking conditions.

Further Details:

Cancellations of accommodation must be submitted in writing to the Conference Secretariat before Monday 12 August 2013. Accommodation deposits will not be refunded on or after Monday 12 August 2013.

Delegates who confirm accommodation but do not advise of cancellation before the accommodation deadline will incur charges for the 'no-show' rate, as penalised by the hotel. This charge is calculated as the room rate per night multiplied by the dates booked and secured. Please ensure the accommodation dates are correct on this confirmation document.

 

It is a hotel requirement that all bookings include credit card details. These credit card details will be forwarded to your selected hotel.  please refer to the Accommodation Tab for further information on Accommodation Payment Schedules for each property.

Instructions for Authors

All abstracts should be submitted online using the abstract portal and abstract template, accessible via the Conference website at www.imsanz2013.org.au

 

If you are unable to access the template, please contact the Conference Secretariat via email at imsanz2013@conceptevents.com.au to make alternative arrangements. The deadline for abstract submission is Thursday 20 June 2013, at midnight Australian Eastern Standard Time.  You will be sent an acknowledgement via email to confirm that your abstract has been received.

 

Abstracts will be accepted for a 15-minute oral (12 minutes plus minimum of 3 minutes discussion time) or poster presentation. Poster authors will be asked to stand by their poster during scheduled poster presentation times. Authors will be notified of the review outcome by 12 July 2013. Further presentation instructions will be given at that time.

 

 

Abstract Guidelines

  1. All abstracts should be original research. Broadly, this could also include an audit, a case report, or a description of a new innovation in health services delivery or education; however the onus is on the author to demonstrate the significance of any work offered for this Conference.
  2. Your abstract must be submitted by Thursday 20th June 2013, at midnight Australian Eastern Standard Time. All abstracts must be submitted online in word format, using the abstract portal and abstract template.
  3. Maximum word count = 300 words including references but excluding title. Abstracts should be in Arial, 11 point font.You will be required to submit your abstract under one of the following themes:
    1. Advanced Trainee Case Presentation Breakfast
    2. Aged Care
    3. Asthma/COPD
    4. Bariatrics
    5. Cardiology
    6. Diabetes
    7. Gastroenterology
    8. Neurology/Stroke
    9. Other
    10. The abstract should be in the form of bolded structured headings (with blank line spaces between each section) as follows: Aims, Methods, Results, Conclusions. Subheadings may be used but should not be given separate paragraphs. For audit submissions the following headings are appropriate: Problem, Design/methods, Practice change, Re-audit, Conclusions. Ideally the audit loop has been completed.
    11. Do not use macros or photographs within your abstract.
    12. Tables may be included with abstracts and must be cited in the abstract text.  The abstracts themselves must be in text, not table format.
    13. References must be included in the body of the text using names and journal references only but not the title. Only include references if direct reference is made to it in text of abstract. References list at the end may be removed.
    14. Abbreviations may be used but must be spelt out in full at the first mention, followed by the abbreviation in parentheses.
    15. All numerical data and statistical analysis (as appropriate) should be presented in the text of the abstract. Statements such as “findings will be discussed” or “data will be presented” are not appropriate, and will probably result in return or rejection of the abstract.
    16. Multiple abstracts from the same overall study are welcome but need to be sufficiently different to justify multiple oral presentations.
    17. Literature reviews may be accepted if it is a rigorous systematic review, i.e. there is a clear description of the literature search methods, criteria for inclusion and exclusion of articles and evidence of critical appraisal of the literature.
    18. All accepted abstracts submissions will be published on the Conference website and the IMSANZ website unless specific exclusion is requested (eg due to submission for publication elsewhere). The abstract submitted for review will be the final version for publication therefore a minimum standard is required. Please ensure:
      • Submitted abstracts not following the rules for formatting, including length and font, are likely to be rejected. Please refer to the Abstract Template which can be downloaded from the website as a guideline for your submission.
      • Abstracts in which the argument cannot be followed will be rejected.
      • Abstracts which give very little or no data will be rejected.

      The IMSANZ Scientific and Research Subcommittee will judge all abstracts. The highest ranking abstracts will assigned an oral presentation (unless otherwise requested), with the remainder offered poster presentations. Poorly presented abstracts may be rejected. 

      Abstracts by Advanced Trainees will be ranked separately. All abstracts will go through a blind reviewing process, therefore please do not include any author or affiliation details within your abstract.  You will however be required to submit author and affiliation details within the online abstract submission form.
    19. All presenters of accepted abstracts (oral and poster) are required to register and pay the Conference registration fee. 
    20. Authors will be notified of the results on 12 July 2013.
Scientific Awards

IMSANZ Advanced Trainee Prize

Purpose

To recognise and reward the valuable contribution made by trainees. This prize will be awarded for the best presentation by an IMSANZ trainee member at the Annual Scientific Meeting.

 

Eligibility

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Current IMSANZ Trainee Member;
  • A trainee of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians; and
  • Not have previously been awarded this prize.
