Speakers/Faculty:

Jose A. Montero MD, FACP 

Associate Professor of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases and International Medicine, USF Health Morsani College of Medicine.


Dr. Jose Montero received his medical degree from the University of South Florida. He completed his Internal Medicine residency in 1996 at Duke University Medical Center. Upon finishing his fellowship training in Infectious Diseases, he joined the faculty at the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine in 1998. Dr. Montero is an Associate Professor of Medicine and is board certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases. 


Dr. Montero has been involved in many activities mostly emphasizing his abilities both as a clinician and educator. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. He serves as faculty in the Florida/Caribbean AIDS Education Training Center and has previously provided numerous lectures for the regional Florida STD/HIV Prevention Training Center and the USF CHART-India program which expands HIV education to clinicians in India. He has previously served as the Chief of Staff at the Hillsborough County Health Department for four years. In 2006 he has come to serve as the Medical Director of Kindred Hospital Central Tampa and now is President of the Medical Staff at that facility. In 2004, he was appointed to the President's Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS (PACHA). 


Dr. Montero's main interests include hospital acquired infections as well as HIV. He is an avid proponent of antimicrobial stewardship, and initiated the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program at Tampa General Hospital in 2010. 


Kevin Stephan, MD, FACP 


Dr. Kevin T. Stephan, MD, FACP currently serves as Chief of Infectious Diseases and Chief of Medicine at Essentia Health St. Mary’s Medical Center and is an Infectious Diseases physician for the Essentia Health East System. He is board certified in Infectious Diseases and Internal Medicine. 


Prior to his current position, Dr. Stephan was the Director of the HIV Program for the United States Air Force, where he spearheaded evaluation, treatment, and research protocols involving HIV infected service members, as well as international HIV prevention efforts in Africa involving various US governmental agencies and NGOs. He has authored or co-authored over 25 peer-reviewed publications. 


Dr. Stephan's current interests include appropriate antibiotic stewardship and curbing antibiotic resistance, tick-borne infectious diseases, skin and soft tissue infections, respiratory infections, emerging infectious diseases, MRSA and other drug-resistant infections, Clostridium difficile, infections of orthopedic and other prosthetic devices, and infections in immunocompromised patients.
