JOINT INJECTIONS WORKSHOP AFTERNOON
Dr Graham Davenport FRCGP
Senior Lecturer and Clinical Champion in Musculoskeletal Medicine, Keele University.
BIOGRAPHY
Dr Davenport is a rural general practitioner in Cheshire and, having been taught by Frank Dudley Hart at Westminster Hospital, he has maintained his interest in rheumatology through the Primary Care Rheumatology Society, of which he is a past-President. Dr Davenport completed an MSc in rheumatology in 1999, and he has been involved in postgraduate education for GPs as a lecturer, trainer, course organiser and appraiser.
He was the RCGP Clinical Champion for Musculoskeletal Medicine (with an interest in Osteoporosis) from 2008-2011 and has been appointed to a similar post at Keele University. He has a particular interest in osteoporosis and has been involved in the development of osteoporosis guidelines, organising the National Osteoporosis Conferences and has worked with NICE on the development of osteoporosis indicators for QoF. He is currently working on the MTA on bisphosphonates for osteoporotic fragility fractures.
He has represented the RCGP and PCRS on the Health Professional Partner Forum of the National Osteoporosis Society, the executive committee of the National Hip Fracture Database, the steering group of the National Audit of Falls and Bone Health in Older People and the National Clinical Reference Group for Specialised Rheumatology.
He is currently a co-investigator on a Keele primary care based research trial into the management of carpal tunnel syndrome. ( INSTinCTS trial) He has chaired a working party to develop guidelines for the early management of inflammatory arthropathy (The S-factor) and ha been involved in similar projects for lupus and ankylosing spondylitis. He is a member of the BSR Gout Group which has recently updated the present gout guidelines. He has run a number of national and local musculoskeletal educational days and conferences for GPs and registrars over the last 20 years.
Apart from primary care, he maintained his clinical skills as a GPSI Rheumatology with the Pennine MSK partnership in Oldham between 2012-2013.
Over the last 34 years in general practice he has used his skills in corticosteroid joint and soft-tissue injections for the benefits of his patients and has also taught these skills to more than 1500 general practitioners over this time.
His workshops include practical demonstrations on electronic models and, in the case of his Wrenbury workshops, patients with acute joint and soft-tissue problems. He also runs workshops at the annual PCRS Conference demonstrating joint injection techniques on cadaveric prosections.
He retired from his practice on the 31/3/2013 to devote more time to improving the musculoskeletal knowledge and skills of general practitioners and his research activities at Keele University.
