Pesti Vigadó Concert Hall – Budapest
The Pesti Vigadó (literally translated as a ‘place of merriments’) was designed by Frigyes Feszl and was opened with a spectacular banquet in 1865. It was the most prestigious concert hall of the 19th century, with performances by the likes of Franz Liszt, Johann Strauss, Johannes Brahms and Claude Debussy. The palace was also used for the purpose of balls, illustrious social events and conferences. The building was severely damaged during the World Wars, but it was reconstructed in harmony with the original designs in the 1970ies. Since its latest reconstruction (2014), the city has been reintroduced to this time-honoured concert and arts venue. The roof terrace offers a unique panorama of the Danube Promenade underneath and the Várkert Bazaar across the river, which also adds up to the prestige of the building.
