The New Zealand Knee and Sports Society will be holding our annual meeting in Taupo the weekend of 12th- 14th October 2018.  As usual there will be functions on both the Friday and Saturday nights and a full day of science on the Saturday.  There will also be a scientific session on Sunday morning. 

This year our principle invited guest speaker is Dr Robert LaPrade from the Steadman Clinic in Vail Colorado.  Many of you will be aware of Dr LaPrade’s substantial contribution to Orthopaedic Sports medicine of the knee over the last decade or more.  He has published widely on complex knee ligament reconstruction amongst other topics and it is an honour that he is supporting our meeting this year.  Please register early for this meeting as I anticipate the demand will be high given the calibre of international speaker we have attracted.

Abstracts and case reports should be submitted no later than July 31st 2018.  Please remember members that it is part of membership to present a case report or paper every three years.

Dr. Robert F. LaPrade

Orthopaedic Complex Knee and Sports Medicine Surgeon

Dr. Robert F. LaPrade is a complex orthopaedic knee and sports medicine surgeon at The Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colorado.  He serves as chief medical officer and co-director of the Sports Medicine Fellowship Program at the Steadman Philippon Research Institute.  He is also the Committee Chair for the Sports Medicine Committee of ISAKOS and is on the Board of Directors of the Vail Valley Surgery Center.  

Often referred to as a "Doctor's doctor" he has specialized skills and expertise in diagnosing and treating complicated knee injuries and previously failed surgeries.  He has treated athletes at all levels, including Olympic, professional, semi-professional and intercollegiate athletes and has returned many athletes back to full participation both after treating either their new injuries or previous failed knee surgeries.  Dr. LaPrade has special expertise in treating posterolateral knee injuries, PCL tears, revision ACL reconstructions, meniscal transplants, MCL injuries, knee osteotomies, fresh osteoarticular allografts, articular cartilage resurfacing procedures, and other difficult combined and revision injuries.  

Selected as "One of the Best Doctors in America" and "One of the Most Compassionate Doctors", Dr. LaPrade is passionate about sports medicine and is recognized for his outstanding and specialized quick and efficient surgical skills.  Dr. LaPrade is known as a specialized clinician scientist who has utilized his vast and comprehensive research on sports medicine injuries to improve patient care and invent new ways to treat knee problems.  Many of the surgeries that he has devised have been performed worldwide and are recognized as the top level of care for many complex knee surgeries.  

As one of the world's most celebrated complex orthopaedic knee sports surgeons, Dr. LaPrade has published more than 400 peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts, 100 book chapters, and has given over 900 professional presentations, symposia, and instructional course lectures.  He has received many awards for his research, including the OREF Clinical Research Award, considered a Nobel Prize of Orthopaedics. His team has also been awarded the Excellence in Research Award from the AOSSM for 3 of the past 7 years and the Cabaud Award in 2017 and 2018. His team has also won the Trillat Award and Achilles award from ISAKOS twice each.  He is also the sole author of the only comprehensive textbook on posterolateral knee injuries and the co-editor of many other textbooks.  He is recognized as a pioneer in knee research, with many referrals from international and nationally recognized physicians due to his successful patient outcomes and his development of more effective surgical techniques for the reconstruction of complex knee injuries.  

In addition to his outstanding clinical care and research accomplishments, Dr. LaPrade is also recognized internationally as an outstanding teacher.  He has been awarded several teaching awards, including 4 annual teaching awards given by the fellows at the Steadman Clinic Sports Medicine Fellowship program.
