This conference presents practical, case-based discussions of outpatient pediatric and adolescent medicine topics for primary care providers. The faculty will discuss current evidence-based diagnostic and management strategies of common pediatric and adolescent medicine conditions referencing treatment guidelines when applicable. The goal of this program is to enhance the participant’s knowledge of common outpatient pediatric and adolescent medicine conditions and provide opportunities for practice change to improve the quality of care of patients.

Topics and Objectives 

Superficial Fungal Infections in Children 
Objectives 1) The participant will be able to identify superficial fungal infections that commonly affect children and adolescents 2) The participant will be able to discuss the management plan of commonly seen superficial fungal infections in the outpatient setting 3) The participant will be able to compare and contrast common superficial fungal infections with other non-fungal disease look a likes 4) The participant will be able to describe methods that can be used in the outpatient setting to differentiate fungal infections from other disease processes

Differentiation and Management of Recurrent Childhood Headaches 
Objectives: 1) The participant will be able to identify different causes of headaches and describe how the use of patient drawings can benefit the health care provider in his or her diagnosis 2) The participant will be able to discuss the management of uncomplicated pediatric migraines, tension headaches and chronic daily headache 3) The participant will be able to identify red flags in the history and physical that signal more ominous disease processes manifesting with head pain 4) The participant will be able to identify non-pharmacologic management strategies that can potentially benefit all patients with chronic pain syndromes

Diagnostic Dilemmas 
Objectives: 1) The participant will be able to identify common childhood problems that pose diagnostic dilemmas in the outpatient setting 2) The participant will be able to develop strategies to avoid cognitive errors when confronted with a diagnostic dilemma 3) The participant will be able to identify general sources of information to aid the health care provider in the diagnosis of clinical conundrums 4) The participant will be able to identify ways to turn diagnostic dilemmas into maintenance of certification credit

Is It a Normal Variant or Not: Clinical Conundrums in the Outpatient Setting 
Objectives: 1) The participant will be able to distinguish normal variations in growth, pubertal progression and development that can be managed by the primary care provider 2) The participant will be able to describe the work-up of children with abnormalities in growth, pubertal progression and development 3) The participant will be able to identify red flags in growth, pubertal progression and development that require referral to a specialist 4) The participant will be able to discuss the long term management of normal variants of growth, pubertal progression and development

Heads Up: Potpourri of Pediatric Ear Nose and Throat Disorders 
Objectives: 1) Visually recognize and discuss the evidence based management of common pediatric ENT disorders 2) Describe clinical scenarios requiring hospitalization and/or consultation with an otolaryngologist 3) Compare and contrast two technological adjuncts to facilitate the diagnosis of otitis media

The Atopic Triad: Management of Asthma, Allergy and Atopic Dermatitis 
Objectives: 1) The participant will be able to discuss the management of a child with chronic asthma and an acute exacerbation of the disease 2) The participant with be able to describe the typical work-up of a child with allergies and first line management by the primary care physician 3) The participant will be able to compare and contrast the different steroid formulations and their efficacy in the treatment of atopic dermatitis 4) The participant will be able to outline the management of a child who has the atopic triad

Sports Medicine: Lower Extremity and Concussions 
Objectives: 1) Be able to examine each joint in the lower extremity to evaluate injury; 2) Understand the basics of sport rehabilitation; 3) Be able to guide parents regarding weight lifting in teens; 4)Be able to apply the latest science regarding sports concussions

Sports Medicine: Back and Upper Extremity 
Objectives: 1) Be able to work up the common causes of back pain in teens 2) Be able to diagnose serious sports injuries of the upper extremity especially young pitchers

Sexual Health 101: Issues Regarding Healthy Sexuality 
Objectives: 1) Know suggested approaches to various sexually transmissible infections 2) Understand HPV prevention 3) Understand new approaches to adolescent sexuality that is more inclusive of the family and compatible with normal adolescent development 4) Understand the pitfalls of current approaches to adolescent sexuality 5) Become familiar with various sex education programs

Adolescent Dermatology 
Objectives: 1) Be able to recognize common foot rashes and know their treatment 2) Be able to diagnose dysplastic nevus syndrome and plan their management 3) Be able to recognize various nevi seen in adolescents

Adolescent Menstrual Disorders and Gynecology 
Objectives: 1) Be able to diagnose the leading causes of menstrual disorders in Adolescents and be able to manage them medically

Adolescent Contraception 
Objectives: 1) Understand the special needs of adolescents when considering contraception 2) Be able to choose the best contraceptive method for an adolescent and be aware of contraindications and warning symptoms of serious complications from contraceptive use
