Welcome message:
This seminar is designed to provide a practical review of gastrointestinal, gynecologic, genitourinary, hepatobiliary and soft tissue pathology, as well as an overview of diagnostic immunohistochemistry. Faculty will discuss pitfalls and pearls to pathologic diagnosis as well as an approach to ancillary diagnostic techniques. There will be significant time for interactive discussion between participants and faculty members.

Target Audience

This CME activity is primarily designed to educate practicing pathologists.


Educational Objectives

Attendees should, at the completion of this course, be able to:

  • Develop an approach to common morphologic patterns seen in soft tissue tumors.
  • Describe ancillary diagnostic techniques including immunohistochemistry and molecular diagnostics in the approach to difficult soft tissue tumors. 
  • Describe the most important diagnostic clues in arriving at a specific diagnosis in the most common patterns seen in soft tissue tumors. 
  • Explain the criteria for the primary histologic features utilized to grade steatohepatitis. 
  • Recognize the key histologic features useful in the diagnosis of focal nodular hyperplasia, hepatocellular adenoma and well-differentiated hepatocellular carcinoma. 
  • Discuss the clinical, laboratory, genetic and histologic features necessary to properly evaluate metabolic liver diseases, including Wilson's disease, alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency and hemochromatosis. 
  • Discern the classic histologic features of celiac disease and the Marsh grading schema.
  • Describe the overlap between eosinophilic esophagitis and gastroesophageal reflux. 
  • Describe the distinguishing histologic features of new variants of ulcerative colitis. 
  • Recognize the different subtypes of endometrial cancers. 
  • Recognize variant morphologies of the most common mesenchymal tumors of the uterus. 
  • Distinguish adenocarcinoma in-situ (AIS) from benign mimickers. 
  • Apply risk stratification criteria for prognostication of gastrointestinal stromal tumors. 
  • Discuss the limitations of conventional diagnostic markers for soft tissue tumors. 
  • Describe the transcription factors useful for the determination of primary site in metastatic carcinoma. 
  • Distinguish pT3 RCC from renal confined (pT1-2) RCC based on a better understanding of the definition of renal sinus involvement. 
  • Describe the most common enrollment criteria for active surveillance in prostate cancer with emphasis on pathologic variables. 
  • Distinguish urothelial carcinoma in situ from reactive urothelial atypia.
