The purpose of this CME activity is to review current diagnosis and management of patients with acute and chronic pulmonary diseases with particular emphasis on sleep disorders.

Course Objectives 

  • Diagnose and treat asthma according to current guidelines
  • Treat difficult asthma
  • Diagnose and treat COPD according to GOLD guidelines
  • Identify and treat patients with sleep apnea
  • Appropriately refer pulmonary arterial hypertension patients
  • Assess ethical issues of various cases
  • Diagnose and treat community acquired pneumonia according to current guidelines
  • Prevent community acquired pneumonia with vaccination
  • Identify appropriate use for induced hypothermia
  • Utilize pathophysiology of hyponatrema to determine appropriate treatment
  • Differentiate between imaging methods used in diagnosing DVT
  • List the most common barriers to quitting smoking
  • Outline the most common sleep state disorders
  • Define insomnia disease state and describe approaches to diagnose and assess insomnia based on standard criteria
  • Discuss the epidemiology of tuberculosis in the US

Director of Bronchoscopy & Chief, Clinical Research Unit, Pulmonary & Critical Care, James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital, Tampa, Florida.

Arthur Andrews, M.D. FCCP, Assistant Professor College of Medicine , Department of Internal Medicine at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine in Tampa Florida.

Dr. Andrews attended Medical School at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey - Robert Wood Johnson where he received his degree in Medicine in 1995. He completed an Internship and Residency in Internal Medicine at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in Jacksonville Florida. Dr. Andrews, completed Fellowship training in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in Rochester Minnesota. He completed 2 years of research in the areas of cigarette smoke extract and its effects on epithelial cells and also idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

Dr. Andrews joined the staff at the University of South Florida subsequent to Fellowship training. He is Board certified in Pulmonary Medicine, Critical Care Medicine and Sleep Medicine. He has an outpatient clinic in Pulmonary Medicine, Sleep Medicine and a lung nodule clinic and also actc as Attending in the inpatient arena for Pulmonary Consultation Service and Critical Care service several months of the year and Bronchoscopy service several months per year.

His current interests include interstitial lung diseases, bronchoscopy and sleep medicine. Bronchoscopy is currently his primary interest particularly the use of endo-bronchial ultrasound (EBUS) in the diagnosis and staging of lung cancer and other malignancies as well as sarcoidosis. Publications are in the areas of COPD and interstitial lung disease and impact on sleep and bronchoscopy.
