ROYAL COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS OF EDINBURGH (RCPE HOT TOPIC SYMPOSIUM) EDINBURGH: FRAILTY
The ageing of our population brings many challenges to healthcare, perhaps none greater than the frailty syndrome. This RCPE Hot Topic Symposium on frailty reflects this and will help to ensure that all relevant professionals have the knowledge and understanding to identify frailty and appreciate its implications for patient care.
Frailty is closely associated with the ageing process and is increasingly recognised as a better predictor of adverse health outcome than chronological age. Key features of frailty include weight loss, low exercise tolerance, and an increased risk of physical functional or cognitive decline in the face of even minor physiological, pharmacological or pathological stress.
This symposium will be of interest to all health care professionals who are involved in caring for older adults in primary and secondary care or at their interface. Specific topics covered will include the biological and clinical definitions of frailty, its recognition, its current and future impact on health care provision, and the management of frail patients in different care settings.
Attendees will learn the importance of ensuring that service design accounts for the particular challenges encountered by the frail old and leave better equipped to support the care of such patients wherever they are encountered.
