We invite you to attend the 25th Nutrition Society Summer Meeting, in Sir George Gilbert-Scott’s neo-gothic splendour of the University of Glasgow. Some of you may remember the first Summer Meeting in July 1989, established by the then President, Professor David Armstrong, and held at Lady Spencer-Churchill College, Oxford Polytechnic. We have reprinted the programme cover at the back of the programme booklet (and below), where you will see that it covered a wide range of specialist interests. We are moving to restore the broad coverage in Summer Meetings, so that they appeal to all, under a common theme, including animal, basic science, clinical and public health nutritionists.
This year, the Society’s Science Committee and the Scientific Organisers, Dr Frank Thies from the University of Aberdeen and Dr Wilma Leslie from the University of Glasgow, have created an exciting programme with a wide range of topics to maximise delegates’ interest in the theme of the meeting ‘Carbohydrates in health: friends or foes?’ I hope that you will find each session stimulating and enjoyable.
Glasgow itself is a stimulating environment with the excitement of the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in July, and the referendum on Scottish independence. Whilst you are in Glasgow, don’t miss out on seeing some of the artistic and architectural gems. On foot, examples of the work of the remarkable architects and designers, Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Alexander Greek Thompson abound. In the galleries, the Kelvingrove and Hunterian Art Galleries and Museums, and the Burrell Collection must be seen.
We look forward to welcoming you to Glasgow, and I look forward to meeting you at the social events that we have organised on your behalf.
Professor Catherine Geissler
President of the Nutrition Society
