Learning Objectives

Participants will understand basic sleep physiology, stages, and functions of sleep. 

Participants will be able to identify signs and symptoms of common sleep disorders. 

Participants will understand types of sleep testing, and when to refer to a specialist.

Participants will learn about Narcolepsy, Idiopathic Hypersomnia, Klein Levin Syndrome, Long Sleeper Syndrome, and Circadian Rhythm Disorders. 

Participants will become familiar with other medical causes of fatigue symptoms.

Participants will become familiar with several models of insomnia symptoms. 

Participants will become familiar with first line therapy for insomnia which includes Sleep Restriction, Stimulus Control, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Relaxation Training.

Participants will understand mechanisms of how stress affects medical disorders, and its impact on metabolic and psychological disorders. 

Participants will learn about efficacy of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) in stressed based disorders.

Participants will learn about common applications for Motivation Interviewing (MI) 

Participants will be able to identify which patients they can use MI skills to elicit change.

Participants will become familiar with the core symptoms of childhood disorders, ADHD and Autism. 

Participants will be able to identify appropriate adult criteria for ADHD. Participants will become familiar with medical therapy for these disorders.

Participants will become familiar with medical therapies of sleep disorders including Insomnia, RLS, Parasomnias, Narcolepsy, and sleepiness from Sleep Apnea.

Discuss the application of testing modalities in common Neurological disease states.

Describe recent advances in the exploration of understanding Alzheimer’s Disease.

Explain the pathophysiology and Diversity of neuropathic symptoms in diabetics.

Discuss the new antiseizure Drugs and non-medical treatment in patients with seizures.

Assess clinical signs and symptoms that will help lead to the appropriate treatment for patients with non-epileptic “spells”.

Apply a better clinical understanding In the pursuit of evaluating and treating neurological conditions and disorders.

Describe common signs that carry important implications in the diagnosis and treatment of neurological illness.

William O. Tatum IV, DO

Professor, Mayo School of Medicine, Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville, Florida .


Dr. William O. Tatum IV is a professor in the Department of Neurology in the Mayo College of Medicine. He is the director of the epilepsy monitoring unit at the Mayo Clinic in Florida. He completed his medical training at the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in Des Moines, Iowa and a post graduate neurology residency at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois. He then completed a two-year epilepsy fellowship at the Graduate Hospital Comprehensive Epilepsy Center in Philadelphia, affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania. After his training, he relocated to Tampa, Florida and in conjunction with Tampa General Hospital, pioneered the Tampa General Hospital-University of South Florida Comprehensive Epilepsy Center before joining the Mayo Clinic in 2009. 


He is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN), the ABPN with added qualifications in neurophysiology, and the American Board of Clinical Neurophysiology. He is currently a fellow in the American Academy of Neurology and the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society. He has served on the board of directors for the American Board of Registration of EEG Technologists and Evoked Potentials. He is president-elect of the board of the American Board of Clinical Neurophysiology and a council member of the board for the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society. He actively lectures in the field of epilepsy, and has authored or co-authored multiple abstracts, peer-reviewed editorials and journal articles, book chapters and has edited/co-edited several books in the field of clinical epilepsy and neurophysiology. His research interests include seizure semiology, drug-resistant epilepsy, and EEG/clinical neurophysiology.
