Event Overview
Welcome message:

This three-day fellowship provides comprehensive instruction in the clinical applications of transcranial Doppler, with a focus on acute care including assessment of the vertebrobasilar system: cerebrovascular reactivity using CO2 inhalation, emboli monitoring and Agitated Saline Study for Detection of a Patent Foramen Ovale. Other topics including vasospasm following aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage, brain death, vascular headache syndrome, emboli detection, stroke risk monitoring in sickle cell anemia, and evaluation of stroke and transient ischemic attacks will be presented in lecture. A brief review in the techniques of Xenon-133 cerebral blood flow monitoring and monitoring of cerebral metabolism using the jugular-venous catheter are also presented as they correlate with transcranial Doppler.

The course covers the use of these techniques emphasizing management in the acute care setting. Cerebrovascular reserve testing using CO2 inhalation and the set up for continuous monitoring of emboli during operative procedures and bedside studies will be discussed and may be demonstrated in the Cerebral Blood Flow Laboratory. Ample hands-on instruction will be provided for the performance of Basic applications of transcranial Doppler.

Upon completion of the three-day course, participants will be able to understand the basic fundamentalsto perform their own transcranial Doppler examination, understand terminology, vascular anatomy, and pathophysiology of cerebral blood flow.
