Event Overview
Welcome message:
This course will review current assessment and intervention methods for adolescents and adults with acquired brain injury (ABI). The course will begin with an overview of current models of cognitive functions and brain-behavior relations, and consideration of the effects of different types of acquired brain damage on cognitive functions in everyday life. The focus will be on cognitive functions commonly affected by ABI, including declarative memory, executive functions, and social cognition. We will apply this information to assessment of individuals with ABI, and then discuss evidence-informed intervention methods designed to maximize functional cognition and communication in everyday life. Special consideration will be given to adolescence, given the critical cognitive and psychosocial developments between ages 13 and 25 years and their influence on treatment goals, adherence, generalization, and long-term outcomes.
