World Psychiatric Association’s International Congress of Psychiatry
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
On behalf of the World Psychiatric Association it is both an honour and a pleasure to invite you to attend the WPA International Congress in Taiwan. The theme of the congress is “Bridging Asia into the world-a new era for psychiatric treatment”. World Psychiatric Association is committed to raising standards of patient care around the globe. A key aspect of this is learning from each other. Asia with its rich and varied history has a lot to teach the world. Spirituality runs deeply in Asia, many of traditional systems of medicine have led to development of new interventions now being used around the globe. In many countries in Asia in spite of limited resources excellent services are being delivered. We need to see how these models work. With its rich tapestry of philosophy, energy and enthusiasm of its population it is appropriate that we channel these into providing even better care for our patients. Stigma against mental illness and mentally ill can be eradicated only by all of us working together with policymakers and patients and their families. We need to ensure that physical health and mental health go hand in hand. This message is clear in many traditional medical models and we need to incorporate the message that there is no health without mental health. As Asia advances rapidly it is essential that it has resources to meet the needs of its growing populations.
We must attract the best and brightest students to the field of psychiatry and ensure that all health professionals are aware of the impact that mental illness can have on the societies and cultures. Psychiatry and Asia both stand at the cusp of greatness and it is apposite that we gather together in order to learn from each other.
I look forward to meeting with you in Taipei, Taiwan and wish the conference all success.
